The reasoning behind the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme is that HSMP aims to provide a path for migration for people who have the skills and experience required by the UK in order for it to compete in the global economy.

The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme HSMP has worked well since it was introduced with around 4,000 people who have already taken advantage of it.

Some significant changes to HSMP, the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, were made in October of 2003, most notably:

•  Earnings achieved in your country do not need to be as high as before in order to score points under HSMP.

•  If your wife or partner has degree level qualifications or has graduate level work experience and wants to also come to work in the UK , you will now find it much easier to get a work permit under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme for both yourself and your wife or partner.

•  If you are under 28 years of age, it will now be easier to obtain a work permit under HSMP: the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme. In particular, you will need far less work experience in a graduate level job and will not have to have earned as much in your job as before under the older HSMP programme.

These changes mean that more people can now qualify to obtain work permits under the reformed Highly Skilled Migrant Programme HSMP.
